On 1 April 2011 Websense announced that thousands of legitimate websites were hacked into and their domains recoded so visitors were redirected to what Websense are dubbing "lizamoon" addresses, named after the first domain to be attacked.
Despite the date of the announcement when redirected, visitors where shown a screen with sham warnings stating that their computers were riddled with viruses. The motive behind this was to frighten people into downloading and installing fake anti-virus software called Windows Stability Center (referred to as "scare-ware"), and comparable with Windows Security Center.
Some of the people that believed this scam were also reported to have paid for the software too. Evidently they were not installing anti-virus software on to their machines, but instead malicious software that hackers could use to their advantage.
